Evidence Summary
Quirk et al (1) looked at physical activity interventions in children and young people with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. A total of 26 articles (10 randomized and 16 non-randomized studies), published in the period 1964–2012, were reviewed. There were no severe episodes of hypoglycaemia in studies in this meta-analysis.
Quality of Evidence
Grade A – High quality evidence
Strength of Recommendation
Grade 1 as this finding is consistent amongst multiple studies
Conclusion
Regular physical activity interventions in children and young people with Type 1 diabetes mellitus can be performed safely with a low risk of severe episodes of hypoglycaemia. Different types of exercise will require different adjustments of insulin and this should be discussed with the healthcare team.
